Career Descriptions
Project Engineer/Project Manager
Most of our Management started here right out of school. This position, allowed them to develop and grow via the “Underground Way.” While we prefer employees straight out of school, there are times when we need to supplement our experience with mid to upper level employees.
It happened to me; maybe it has happened to you. One day I realized that I didn’t want to work for my former employer. It wasn’t a singular event - not one person, but a sequence of changes that started my search for another job. Sound familiar?
There are certain qualities that work extremely well at Underground. Our engineers/managers are detail oriented individuals with excellent “people skills.” This is a people business. We survive on repeat customers and creating positive business relationships with our clients. You must be willing to travel anywhere in the United States. Our projects can last from three months to three years. Our engineers generally have a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management and some are working toward their Professional License. We strongly encourage that. Our work includes refinery and industrial work, airport fueling, and general utility work.
Superintendent
Our Superintendents have come up through the ranks starting their careers as laborers, operators or carpenters. This early mastery of their trade coupled with an ability to organize, lead others and promote future business through client relationships makes them a valuable asset.
Superintendents distinguish themselves from foremen through their ability to manage other foremen, subcontractors, equipment and personnel. Their experience is varied allowing them to make informed decisions and balance the fine line of risk and reward.
Foreman
Foremen represent our first line management. They have been selected from their respective crews to lead others. Their hard work, knowledge of the work and leadership qualities separate them from the others. They are further developed through training programs and mentoring by our Superintendents. They are the next generation of Superintendents.
Laborer, Operator, Truck Driver, Carpenter, Welder and Mechanic
Laborers form the greatest part of our work force. The nature of our work requires that they work physically most of the day, what might be called an “honest days work.” And as with most tasks, there is more to it than meets the eye. Our laborers start with the three basics; prompt attendance, strong work ethic and an interest in their work. From there they develop into lead men and hopefully our next generation of foremen.
Operators are at the heart of our productivity. Their ability to safely and productively operate our equipment ensure the financial success of our Company. Good operators are vital to any operation.
Truck Drivers have the serious responsibility of safely navigating our large vehicles through treacherous conditions. Modern day distractions like cell phones have created roadway hazards unlike those before.
Carpenters, while few in numbers, are a skilled craft that compliment our general work force. Over the years we have employed carpenter crews to construct structures both in support of our other utility work and as stand alone projects.
Welders are a specialized part of our work force that focuses primarily on our Airport Fueling and Industrial sectors. They often travel across the nation following us wherever we go.
Mechanics work both in our Benicia Shop and on jobsites via our Mechanics Truck. They will work on everything from small water pumps to excavators.
