Aircraft Fueling Facilities

Over twenty-five years ago, Underground Construction Co. Inc. began constructing fuel storage facilities, pumping systems, pipelines, and hydrant systems at airports nationwide for the newly developed direct fueling of aircraft. Airport expansion, consolidation of fueling systems, and improvement in storage and delivery methods has kept us on the move as we continue to service the nation’s airlines and airport infrastructure. We pride ourselves on meeting the tight schedules of our clients who cannot accept any delays in the rush to satisfy their own customers’ demands.

Our list of commercial and military airport projects is long and continues to grow. Our success has taken us beyond our extensive commercial projects to military fueling facilities and infrastructure as well.

If your last flight wasn’t fueled by a system built by Underground Construction Co. Inc., your next flight probably will be.

Projects In Progress List:

Project:P-401 – Point Loma Naval Base Fuel Storage Upgrade

Owner: Dept US Navy

The project, referred to as P-401 – Point Loma Naval Base Fuel Storage Upgrade, was awarded to The Nova Group/ Underground Construction Company, a Joint Venture, on September 26, 2008. The work includes the total reconstruction of the existing One Million Barrel fuel storage facility. We are constructing new Fuel Oil Recovery and treatment facility, six new 125,000 barrel aboveground fuel storage tanks, supporting facilities include a pump house, distribution piping, truck load/unloading, dispensing system, FSII tanks, all new utilities, and four storm water sedimentation facilities. The project also includes the demolition or closure of existing aboveground and underground storage tanks, removal of all utilities and facilities, and provides extensive remediation of contaminated soil. The project is located in San Diego, California, and is expected to be completed early 2013.

Project: McCarran Airport Fuel Farm

Owner: LAS Fuels Corporation

The scope of work at the McCarran Airport Fuel Farm is to renovate and update the existing facility to current environmental standards while also increasing the capacity of the fuel system and enhancing security. Underground is adding a 65,000 BBL fuel storage tank, replacing about half of the above ground piping, and adding a large underground valve manifold and vault. Because we must integrate the new fuel system components into an operating tank farm, multiple live tie-ins and flushing operations will be completed under a 5 hour time constraint. We are updating the truck rack, adding two fuel pumps, building several containment walls, and installing a liner in the south half of the tank farm.

UCCO has started to install the entirely new storm drain system in the south tank farm, including a lift station and an above ground oil water separator. We are also replacing most of the AFFF fire protection system to the facility. To finish the project off we are installing a new security fence and access gates, adding a fire access driveway, replacing the existing entrance driveway, and repaving a significant portion of the facility. The biggest challenge that this project presents is maintaining access to the tank farm and the availability of fuel 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year.

Completed Projects List:

Project: San Jose Airport Fuel Storage

Owner: SJC Fuel Company, LLC

The fuel storage facility is located off the airport property bound by Highway 101 and the Guadalupe River on a 27,000 square foot (0.6 acre) site. The facility provides for storage of 30,000bbl (1,260,000 GAL) of JET-A fuel for the Airport. In addition to the fuel storage facility, Underground Construction has built an airside truck loading facility. Standard procedure allows fuel to be stored at the storage facility and pumped under Highway 101 to the airport where the airside loading facility will be located.

The fuel storage facility has the capacity to unload fuel delivered by truck using a (3) unload stations and store in (3) aboveground storage tanks. Utilizing a Pre-filter, Clay Treater, and filter separator system, the facility delivers clean, dry fuel to the (4) position loading facility.

Project: Dallas Love Field Fuel Storage Facility Design/Build

Owner: Southwest Airlines

Underground Construction was awarded this Design/Build project to replace the existing 1950’s underground fuels storage facility with this state of the art aboveground Jet-A fuel receipt/storage/filtration/into-hydrant pumping facility; on the same site without interruption to aircraft fueling operations. This project provided 3 new API650 10,000bbl Jet-A storage tanks, concrete containment walls, 3600gpm pumping and filtration capacity, dual truck loading/unloading stations, mogas and diesel receipt/storage/dispensing facilities, plus 3 new buildings for Electrical, Fuels Lab, and OMC with service bays.

The project environmental elements included the removal of 18ea 60,000gal single-wall underground storage tanks, soils removal and clean fill replacement of some 11,000cys. all within a small two acre site, without a lost time injury, no security breeches, and 0 interruptions to airline fueling operations.

Project: Andrews AFB Type III Hydrant System

Owner: Naval Facilities

The Naval Facilities at Andrews AFB, called upon Underground Construction Co. Inc. to install an Air Force Type III Pressurized Hydrant Fueling System to replace their current truck fueling facility. . This project provides one 1,200 gpm pumphouse, and 8-inch transfer line, an hydrant loop with 6 hydrant pits, and 2ea 5,000barrel above ground operating tanks.

The project construction included cathodic protection and fire detection in accordance with the Air Force Type III Pressurized Hydrant Fueling System Standard. The system provides JP-8 refueling and defueling capability via HHT at 6 aircraft parking locations, with each hydrant outlet design capacity of 600gpm. The pumphouse, approximately 3,300 square feet, has three 600gpm pumps; two active and one standby. Backup power is provided by an emergency generator housed in a separate building

Project: DFW Fuels Storage Renovation Project

Owner: DFW Airport Board

This project involved the complete refurbishment of the DFW Airport Fuels Storage Facility, increasing capacity to 468,000bbl of Jet-A, while continuing critical inbound and outbound fuels supply to the existing airfield hydrant systems. Original aboveground Jet-A fuel storage tanks were either retrofitted to API650 stds, or demolished. Three new API650 fuel storage tanks were constructed, with all new associated fill, suction, and recirculation lines, new into hydrant pumping facilities comprising 14ea 1,200gpm API 610 pumps and associated filtration and controls, truck unloading/loading racks, waste oil recovery system, facilities startup and commissioning. An AFFF fire suppression system incorporated tanks and containment areas.

Project: DFW Automated People Mover

Owner: DFW Airport Board

This project in support of the DFW Automated People Mover project required the relocation of 85 fuel hydrant pits as required for the adjusted aircraft loading positions. Underground provided full commissioning and start-up of the pressurized aircraft fueling system upon completion of individual segments.

Work occurred at 63 different gates and four active terminals. Detailed project scheduling of all fueling work was required to remain compliant with owner and airport requirements as 4,500 feet of 6” lateral fuel pipe were installed. Demolition and repaving of 17” Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), construct concrete fuel isolation control vaults, inclusive of shoring and excavation to 12’, and completion of all necessary drain downs and tie-ins to existing system occurred without interruption.
