PROJECT PROFILES

Miami International Airport
by Jon Klion

It is hard to believe we are already well into our fourth year at Miami International Airport. Our crews have been extremely busy and productive this year in both construction activities and service to the owner's needs. The hard work and professionalism extended by the entire Underground Miami team has manifested itself through the execution of the existing contracts and the addition of two new projects. Our original project, American Airlines North Terminal Hydrant Fueling System, continues to be the backbone of our work.

This year, Underground crews have installed a large 17 x 17 x 15 foot under ground control vault, 2,400 feet of double-walled 14 inch jet fuel pipeline, 18 fuel hydrant pits and four isolation valve pits. American Airlines has taken beneficial occupancy of over half of the contracted work on schedule. Due to Underground's hard work, we were awarded a change order adding another 8,000 feet of double-walled 20 inch fuel pipeline to our contract. We would like to recognize Superintendent Nick Cunningham, Foremen Robert Jett and Joe Dowdy, and the entire crew for a job well done. Also, we would like to welcome the addition of our new project engineer, Paul Bessell. Paul's previous two years of experience at Miami International Airport has provided our team invaluable assistance in dealing with the numerous challenges that the project presents.

In addition to the ongoing American Airlines work, Underground undertook the new challenge of constructing the West Cargo Fuel Tender Facility and the H&J Utility Project on the South Terminal as a subcontractor to Gilbert Southern Corporation. The Cargo Facility Project entailed the installation of 960 feet of double-walled 12 inch jet fuel pipeline, a flow control valve station and six jet fuel on

truck loading racks. Thanks to the diligence of our crews the project was completed safely and ahead of schedule. The owner, Aircraft Services International Group, will take possession of the facility in April 2004. The H&J Utility project involves building a new terminal and includes the installation 8,000 feet of double-walled 12 inch jet fuel pipeline, a 17 x 21 x 17 foot under ground control vault, 8 isolation valve pits and 48 hydrant fueling pits. To date we are 75 percent complete with the project and we anticipate final completion in February of 2004.

Finally, we were the successful bidder on the Bulk Fuel Storage Facility Fire Protection System. We are fortunate to have our project engineer, Shawn Murphy, back from the DHL fueling project in Cincinnati. To help with the project, we have added a new superintendent to our forces, Todd Rector. He comes to us with 18 years experience in the mechanical fueling industry and his experience and positive attitude are welcome additions to our team. With the addition of Greg McNeilly, also back from the DHL project, we have a great team for this challenging project. The project began in early October and includes 5,000 feet of both four inch carbon steel fire foam piping and 5,000 feet of 8 and 16 inch ductile iron fire water pipe, construction of a pump house, retrofitting two 400,000 gallon fuel storage tanks to water storage, installation of a complete fire alarm and suppression system.

We look forward to the remaining challenges presented by our ongoing participation in this six year program.
