MAJOR FIBEROPTIC JOBS KEEP THE TEAM BUSY By George Bradshaw |
We will complete approximately 101 miles of new fiber optic facility in the next few months with the help of fellow Quanta companies, Manual Bros., Golden State Utilities,
VCI,
"The growth in telecommunication services and the Internet continue to fuel fiber optic network expansion." and other subcontractors. Three of these projects are major backbone routes reconnecting Oakland to San Jose in the East Bay, and San Francisco to Mountain View on the Peninsula. Our work in downtown San Francisco continues as we construct new facilities down both sides of the Bay. Two of the projects are design/build, totaling 36 miles. In addition, we are constructing a new backbone ring in Concord. In the last four years, Underground will have |
|
| Underground has been installing fiber optic cable since the early 80s. Our first experiences were in cross-country projects connecting major metropolitan cities. We expanded our fiber optic work into metropolitan areas, building upon our past utility and cross-country experience. Our latest efforts began four years ago when we constructed a fiber optic ring in downtown San Francisco. The growth in telecommunication services and the Internet continue to fuel fiber optic network expansion.
Two years ago, in an effort to mitigate the impact on the City streets, residents, and costs to our clients, we began an effort to place multiple clients in each of our projects. We developed a design/build team that utilizes our experienced project managers, enthusiastic project |
engineers, seasoned superintendents, skilled craftsmen, and highly professional design personnel to provide a turnkey service to our clients. This effort has been very successful and well received by both clients and the various cities in which we have performed work.
Along with the construction boom in fiber optic network expansion, comes the increased potential for damage to our environmental and cultural resources. The California Public Utilities Commission has mandated that each project be reviewed to determine the potential for an impact on environmental and/or cultural resources. If sensitive sites are flagged within the project areas, trained monitors are assigned to assist us in performing our work, while minimizing the potential for damage. |
