The Importance of Ethics

Lynn Barr
Your Company has been in business as Underground Construction Co., Inc. since 1936. Its predecessor was called Contra Costa Construction Co. and it started in 1900.

Construction companies come and go. Very few of the companies that built the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges or the Caldecott Tunnel or even BARTD are here today. The companies that are still active have one thing in common — a reputation for fair dealing. This applies to their employees, their customers, their suppliers/subcontractors and their government. They are good citizens in their communities and they promote safety, training and ETHICAL CONDUCT in their sphere.

Maintaining good ethical conduct is the easiest thing in the world; all we have to do is to treat our business partners fairly. Let’s take a look at some examples.
Treat every employee, as you would like to be treated; do your part to keep them safe, pay them properly and treat them with dignity and respect. After all it’s only right.

Our customers deserve prompt, courteous attention. We must continue to strive to meet their needs in an aboveboard manner. We must do all the things on a job that we promise to deliver and more. The customers will continue to rely on us if they feel they receive full value for their money. Underground has long been termed “THE CADILLAC OF THE INDUSTRY”, let’s keep it that way.

We rely on our suppliers/subcontractors to meet our customer obligations. Some of them have also been with us from the beginning. It has long been our policy that if we use a price from a specific supplier in an estimate and we get the job, then they get the order. It’s only fair. Shop before the bid, not after.

Governmental agencies are also our partners in business. We need their cooperation and goodwill to conduct our operations. If we are obligated by Federal, State, local law or ordinance to do certain things, then it is our responsibility to embrace the program and make sure that we and our partners comply. If we see something that is not in compliance, fix it. It’s the law.

Each of  you is a part of the 100 year legacy that is Underground Construction Co., Inc. We can all be proud that we know how to conduct ourselves ethically. Ethical conduct has been our policy in the past and it is the way we will continue to work with our partners in the future.
