Job Profiles

 Jose Camacho
Celebrates 25 Years

Jose started with Underground at the beginning of 1976 (our country's bicentennial). It's hard to believe that was 25 short years ago. Jose's first job was with Ray Gutierrez in Alameda. That first morning Jose started with another laborer (Jose doesn't remember his name). Ray showed them both how to operate a jackhammer. Within two hours, Ray sent the other laborer home and kept Jose. The rest is history.

Jose spent much of his time in the Livermore Yard doing Pac Bell maintenance for Bob Williamson, and later for Tom Cornett. Jose was considered the "heavy crew", and there wasn't a job he couldn't handle. Give him a print in the morning, and he would take care of it from there. The inspectors were amazed at the quality of his work and how quickly he would complete it. Jose was the first one in the yard in the mornings and the last one to leave at night. It was difficult, if not impossible, to find anyone to keep up with him. Jose has spent almost all of his time with Underground working in the Pac Bell Division. He then moved around the Bay Area installing Controlled Environmental Vaults.

He is now on a job in the City of Santa Clara working with Mike Williams and Hector Mendoza, installing fiber optics systems.

Jose was born in El Crucero de Santa Maria, a small town outside Guadalajara in the State of Jalisco, Mexico. He has six children: four girls and two boys. The oldest is Raul, followed by Nancy, Elia, Arabel, Veronica, and Gabriel. Raul also worked for Underground in the Livermore Yard. He came to us with Jose's outstanding work ethics.

Weather permitting, Jose enjoys playing futbol (soccer) once or twice a week, and going for long walks in the evenings. Generally, he just loves exercising.

Thank you, Jose, for twenty-five years of hard work. Ray Gutierrez obviously knew how to pick 'em.

EVERY DAY A NEW
FIRE DRILL

By Tom Cornett

The Pac Bell maintenance work is a constant challenge in both safety and coordination.

Each morning we organize 10 or so men to complete assignments from the previous day. We then assign work given to us at 7:00 am, and all the work that comes in throughout the day. Multiply that by 8 foremen, and we have what seems to be a fire drill each morning. Job planning is an immediate response to our customers' needs. Each crew is required to carry the proper equipment, tools and safety apparatus to do the job correctly and safely.

Trying to anticipate the job requirements becomes very difficult due to the diverse type of work we encounter each day. Manhole cleaning, dig ups for cable repair, flagging for cable placement are but a small example of what we prepare for. Each of these tasks has a special safety requirement: safety cones, warning signs, manhole testers, manhole blowers, barricades, steel plates, arrow boards. The list is endless.

Underground is a leader in safety and we supply the best safety gear available to our employees. Each device has a purpose. Hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety vests, gloves, and metatarsal covers allow our employees to go about their daily tasks with confidence. Our crews can leave the yards knowing they have the best gear and tools available to do the job safely and efficiently.

Organizing the daily fire drill is easier when you know your crews will be there tomorrow because they worked safely today.
