TRAINING

All of us at Underground Construction Co., Inc. realize the importance of safety in our business. Whether it is to protect against employee injury, vehicle accidents, property damage, or risk to the public, working safely is the key.

With almost 400 employees working and 245 vehicles on the road each day, keeping safety at the forefront requires constant attention from everyone. We believe that a good safety record is achieved by reinforcing a positive safety attitude, safety awareness, and training.

The positive attitude toward safety can only be realized when we recognize "what's in it for me?" Whether at home or on the job, we all need to be aware of the rewards of safe practices. Going home safely every day and keeping one's family safe might be reward enough for some. Material rewards might be important to others. Recognition of safe work habits is evident on every Underground crew. From hats, shirts, vests, jackets, and knives, to gift certificates and cash, every Underground employee is rewarded for safety.

"With continuing effort on the part of every employee, Underground Construction Co., Inc. will continue to be one of the safest companies to work for in our industry."

Safety awareness goes beyond working safely as an individual. Working as a team and watching for your fellow employees is essential. Watching out for unsafe conditions and correcting or reporting the condition is just as important. We need as many eyes on safety as we can get. We have instituted a formal Job Hazard Analysis Program on several jobsites, with the intent of expanding the program to all projects. Our field safety staff and all of the engineering staff carry Safety Checklist booklets for jobsite inspections. The inspections are designed to increase safety awareness on every level.

Training is inseparable from safety. Safe work practices are taught in both the classroom and in the field. All craft training is integrated with safety training. Our training facility in Benicia is in use almost every weekend for classes ranging from First Aid/CPR and Competent Person Training to our Laborer Certification Program. Other training is conducted on the job, such as Forklift Operation and Flagger Certification. Other classes are conducted at third party facilities such as Directional Drilling Operation and Lineman's Training class for Outside Plant Technicians.

With continuing effort on the part of every employee, Underground Construction Co., Inc. will continue to be one of the safest companies to work for in our industry.
