DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
by George Bradshaw

Even with the down turn in the telecommunication industry, our directional drilling crews continue at a brisk pace. The major backbone systems are either in place or nearly complete in the Bay Area. The telecommunication companies are now placing emphasis on soliciting clients who need the voice, data and video services provided by these firms. In addition to single building connections, we have clients that are constructing facilities to provide voice, data and video transmission on their own corporate campuses. Although Underground is a traditional construction company, three years ago we embarked on providing our clients with design/build services. Initially, the work involved construction of backbone systems connecting the various telecommunication hub sites throughout the Bay Area. Underground has changed along with the industry and is now focusing on the so-called "last mile" or providing connections to specified buildings from the already constructed backbone systems.

We are currently in the construction phase of a design/build project in Cupertino. Our client is a major telecommunications provider, which was contracted to provide services to their customer in the area. We were initially contacted to provide feasibility and cost studies for the proposed project. Upon completion of the study, Underground Construction was chosen to design the conduit system, obtain the permits and to finally construct the facility.

Prior to beginning the design phase, we met with our client, their customer and City of Cupertino representatives to obtain available information, discuss parameters of the new system, and determine if there were any constraints and/or limitations that would impact or stop the project. Our objectives were simple: Select the shortest route, minimize the impact to the existing facilities, minimize the interruption to our client's customer and their ongoing operations, and minimize the easement required from the City.
Since the process was set in motion, coordination meetings have been held on a weekly basis to review the completed work and make any necessary adjustments. These meetings have proved successful in maintaining the tight timeframe for completion of this project. From concept to completion this project will take approximately 14 weeks.

Our client representative has expressed praise and satisfaction for the professional manner in which this project has been managed and implemented. Their customer has also been impressed by the conduct of the crew onsite and the production and skill demonstrated on a daily basis by our personnel.

Jerred Peebles and Jose Lopez Ceja have the responsibility of completing this project within budget and time. Larry Yamamoto, Shawn Powell, Arturo Navarro, and Greg McNeilly are supporting Jerred and Jose in a team effort to complete this project on schedule.
