On January 1, 1973 I left Peter Kiewit Son's Co. and joined Underground
Construction Co., Inc. I immediately started working with Dan Schillinger
and Bill Gaffney out of the 16th Street Yard in San Francisco. It was a
few weeks later that I met Dick Hall for the first time. I'll never forget
the feeling of being part of a family instead of an employee when Dick said
to me "Don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions or need
help. Welcome to Underground Construction". I knew then that I had
made the right decision to join Underground Construction. After 27 years
I still know that I made the right decision. Working with all of the Underground
"characters" (you know who they are) turned work into fun and
has produced some great memories (I forgot the bad ones). Patty and I have
close friends scattered all over the country from the projects I've worked
on, - Atlanta, Nashville, Los Angeles to name a few.
I guess the most important aspect of being part of Underground is that
we are highly respected in the industry. The posture of our past leaders
Dick Hall, Tom McManus, Jim Siler and
|
Tom McManus Jr. instilled the practice of honesty, integrity, good work
ethics, safety and quality to everyone working for Underground. This attitude
not only makes
I guess the most important aspect
of being part of Underground is that we are highly respected in the industry.
Underground Construction stands head and shoulders above most other companies,
it also sets excellent standards for personal conduct.
This brings me back to the "family feeling". I believe
that the benefit from a good deed is much greater than the effort put forth
for the good deed. Underground Construction is an example of how this works
and why employees feel like they belong to a family instead of being a name
on a payroll sheet. If I've been able to impart the "family feeling"
to just one of our employees then I consider |
myself successful.
Best wishes for good health and happiness to all of my Underground
family and industry friends.
Warm personal regards.
