| In early May, Underground
Construction Co., Inc. broke ground on the 2002-2003 Underground Utility Project located
throughout the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. This is an exciting
project offering many challenges such as deep excavations within congested areas, as well
as working within and around the numerous other contractors on site. Scheduling and being
in constant communication with the owner is proving to be of the utmost importance in
performing the work. The work includes the installation of 1850 trench feet of
double-walled 6" steam and 3" condensate piping, 900 tf of 8" sanitary
sewer, 850 tf of 8" storm drain piping, and 1600 tf of concrete encased
telecommunication/electrical duct bank. With these systems includes the installation of
their respective |
manholes and/or vaults. Many of the steam vaults that are to
be installed require bypassing the existing system, removing the old vault, and replacing
it with a new pre-cast vault. These new steam and condensate vaults have a great deal of
piping and fit-up, which require fair amounts of welding and brazing at each location. This
project is under the watchful eyes of Project Manager Rick McLaughlin, Superintendent Mike
Carlton, Project Engineer Ben Lyon and Mechanical Foreman Bill Paredes. Our Underground
employees are committed to providing our customer with a professional staff, quality work
and a safe work environment. Go Bears!!! |
