In July of 1976, an eighteen-year-old George Castro
walked into the Underground Pacific Bell yard in Concord for the first time. Little did he
know then, but he would stay for 26 years and eventually he would be a superintendent for
Underground.
George started working with his Dad, Eleuterio, who
also worked for Underground for 17 years, along with Jose Mora and Gene Franke, doing cost
plus work for Pac Bell. Since then, he has worked all over the Bay Area as well as
Salinas, Hollister, Santa Rosa, and San Luis Obispo performing an array of work, including
electrical, gas, telephone, water, and fiber optic work.
Over the years working for Underground, one project
stands out in George's mind: the Level 3 project in San Jose he performed in 1999 through
2000. The project involved installing approximately 5 miles of fiber optic duct bank
throughout downtown San Jose, working both days and nights while following the city's
restrictions and regulations. The project was terribly difficult and rewarding at the same
time.
George's proudest achievement while working for
Underground is becoming a superintendent. It's a confirmation of all the hard work he's
performed and the knowledge he's attained and those are precisely the attributes he wants
most to pass on to the younger employees that work for him. As a person, his proudest
achievement is his family, including his wife, Dora and their three sons, Eladio, 21,
Gabriel, 15, and Lorenzo, 2 this December. On his free time, George likes to camp and play
sports, including baseball, football, and basketball.
Underground looks forward to many more great years
with George and, who knows, Lorenzo may be ready and waiting to take his place when George
is ready to retire...
