Lighting Up The City

The race is on! It's an election year, the stock market is still at record levels and the potential of the Internet and other communications markets looms large. All this adds up to very exciting times in the world of fiber optics.

There are at least six different fiber companies busily placing both their fiber rings and Bay Area loops in the City, each racing to be the first provider. Potential service includes data transmission, voice communication, possibly television and telephone service, and of course - "The Net!" I'm sure we would all enjoy faster speed on-line.

Revised Excavating Standards in the streets of San Francisco have placed greater emphasis on public awareness, attention to traffic congestion and timely start to finish durations. Our strong relationship with the City and its various agencies has turned seemingly intolerable conditions into a workable environment.

It takes a special breed to be successful in the City. While at first the challenges of non-stop traffic, unruly pedestrians and cab drivers can appear overwhelming, our employees quickly l

earn how to protect themselves and others while placing the various conduit systems through 100 years of existing utilities. Our two greatest challenges are the safety of our employees and others and the demanding deadlines of our market-concious clients. We are proud to boast that both are being accomplished. This can only be done with the hard work of our project management team and the dedication of our work force. Lead by superintendents George Albright, Joe Kovacich, Lance MacFarlane, Larry Yamamoto, George Castro and Mike Carlton, our work is being done safely and productively. Foremen Jose Lopez-Ceja, Jesus Garcia, Alfonso Ochoa, Jesus J. Ochoa, Rafael Saavedra and Dave Jarrat are working hard and learning fast about work in the City. All of this is supported by Rick Shone, Andrew McManus and Ben Lyon. Mindi Ritzman was involved early in the process and has moved to other projects.

All things equal, this work should continue well into the next year and possibly beyond. Underground looks forward to providing the foundation for the latest in technology.
