Underground's Full Service Maintenance Department
by Tom Thornton

A diverse workload needs an equally diverse equipment fleet. With a replacement value in excess of $19 million, Underground's equipment ranges from small gas engine powered pumps to the "Big Iron", excavators and loaders. Procurement and maintenance of such a large fleet exacts a large effort.

Chris York coordinates the effort of our entire mechanical staff. His years of field experience as a mobile mechanic lends to a remarkable understanding of what it takes to keep things moving in the field.

The equipment division offers a variety of services to our jobs. Whether it's driver dispatch for our medium and heavy-duty trucks, arranging transportation of equipment, supplying small tools and equipment, or performing repairs and maintenance of our equipment both in our Benicia facility and in the field, our group can handle it!

Tim Bailey maintains our fleet of 230 cars and light trucks (pickups and one-ton flatbeds in our Benicia shop. Tim is a licensed smog inspector allowing us to inspect our own vehicles' emission systems. Additionally, we have an agreement with Chevrolet Motor Division allowing us to perform all of our own warranty work in-house. With this many vehicles to look after, Tim is never short of work.

The balance of our fleet is made up of 53 medium and heavy trucks, 85 trailers (of all types), 16 wheel loaders, 2 excavators, 18 backhoes, 8 directional bore machines, 3 rough terrain cranes, 8 bull dozers, 75 air compressors and other miscellaneous pieces of equipment. All repairs are performed by our mechanics, jobbing out only the repairs of fuel injection pumps and machine shop work. Given the variety of equipment, our mechanics need to be proficient in many areas such as engine repair, power trains, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and welding. Ernesto Ramos, Dan Clouse (also a field mechanic), Darrell Shaw and Tim Keltner do whatever is needed to keep Underground equipment maintained and safe for our field crews. At our Benicia facility, our field mechanics, Jerry Rodriguez, Mike Bracco and Lee Brandenburg, keep equipment running and maintained on jobsites scattered throughout northern California.

Our shop in Benicia has the capacity to do more than just repairs. Over the years, we have built and modified equipment to meet the needs of our jobs, most recently building a 7' diameter compaction wheel for a Roseville Telephone job.

Kevin Bringham and Larry Neumer are responsible for keeping our repair staff supplied with the parts they need in a timely and cost effective manner. They also help supply our jobs with small tools. Greg Martin assists by picking up and delivering parts as needed.

Cliff Witham dispatches equipment and drivers to the jobs and coordinates equipment moves with our field supervision. Cliff also arranges for equipment tire repairs and mobile communications, including cell phones, Nextel radio/phones and two-way radios.

Rhonda Williams keeps track of our fuel cards, DMV registration renewals and many other administrative tasks that help us track equipment and develop job costs.

Mike Woods, Bob Hale and Robert Kitchens take care of the Benicia yard, safely loading and unloading trucks, repairing aluminum trench shores and organizing the equipment in the yard. Mike also tests and sends air tools and small equipment out for repair, as well as monitors inventory control.

Underground truly has a full service Equipment Division.
