DIVISIONAL REPORTS

2000 Was a Record Setting Year

Contract Utilities
by Dale McCourt

The contract utility work continues to be fast paced and geographically diverse. We are proud to provide a safe, quality and on schedule service.

Underground was honored this year to assist Habitat for Humanity and provide crews and material for the joint utility trench at Ellis Street Townhomes in Concord.

George Castro, with help from foremen Gustavo Elias-Cortes, Allan Lee, Jose "Pepe" Machuca and Jesus Ochoa, started the year in San Jose on 6 miles of fiber optic construction. They then moved their seasoned construction team on to a Pacific Bell Joint Trench in the Oakland Hills.

Sergio Cortez, with help from Armando Gomez and Sefo "Joe" Leafa are in Palo Alto working for the City's Electric Underground Division ensuring that power continues to flow in the heart of Silicon Valley. Dave Jarratt is working on various projects from Palo Alto and San Jose to San Francisco.

Bob Roberts, with help from Jose "Pepe" Machuca and Brian Salazar, installed 20 miles of conduit and 40 communication vaults for Roseville Telephone's fiber optic system. Mike Soucie is busy installing Controlled Environment Vaults. These projects require accurate scheduling of resources to comply with the phone company's schedule. Mike Williams and lead laborers, Jose Camacho and Hector Mendoza, are traveling the Bay Area installing vaults and conduit.

Rich Swanson and foreman W.K. "Smitty" Smith are continuing to connect customers to Merced's power grid. Ashley Carter, Juan Flores, Gene Franke and Dan Harvey are well aquainted with California's highways through their travels to manage and estimate the work.

Roseville Telephone Co.
A change has occurred within our ranks; Bob MacDonald has become a Roseville Telephone employee. In his place the reigns will be handed to David Gross, a long time member of the Roseville Team. Dave, along with Tom MacDonald and our newest member of the management team, Meliton "Shadow" Ortega, will try to keep up with RTC's hectic schedule. The rocky ground conditions are but a minor inconvenience to their progress. The outlook is bright with housing tracts popping up everywhere. We wish the new team good luck .

Pacific Bell
Cesar Coronel and his crews cover Fremont, Newark and Union City, and now Milpitas. Casey Simi traverses from Berkeley to Walnut Creek trying to keep up with the work load. Planning their next jobs, Mark Dorey and crews travel from Concord to Discovery Bay. Tony Simi and his crews are working in Oakland, repairing and restoring as they go. Rick Acosta, our newest member of the group, runs our "heavy crew" trenching to place new facilities as needed in all of the above areas.

Keeping up with Pac Bell's work is a full time job, manning the work in today's market has become a challenge. We are training new people every day in an effort to provide our customer with a well-trained, well-equipped work force. Our goal is and always has been to provide the most efficient, responsive and highest quality "product' on the market. We may not be the cheapest, but we think we're the best at what we do!

Fueling Division

San Francisco International Airport

Our work activities at SFO were of a wide variety during the year, from the installation of 2" fuel supply lines, relocation of fuel hydrant pits, abandonment of existing jet fuel lines, to start and completion of the MOC II. MOC II involved the renovation and upgrade of the aircraft fueling/defueling systems within all of United Airlines' seven maintenance hangers.

Miami International Airport
Our five-year project with American Airlines for the Aircraft Hydrant Fuel Distribution System renovation for the North Terminal Development Project took off with a strong start. We mobilized onsite in June, set up our construction yard and field offices, and have completed the installation of three hydrant pits (out of an expected 64 pits) and a temporary underground concrete control valve vault. We're on target to have the first of nine areas completed by year's end.

Indianapolis, United Airlines Maintenance Facility
At United Airlines' new maintenance facility, we installed new fueling and defueling pump skids. Three of the skids were owner supplied and Underground fabricated a fourth. The work also involved the installation of over 2,000' of overhead 8" jet fuel lines.

Another successful summer of steam work has been completed on the campus at Stanford University. Our crews completed the installation of two sections of 4" condensate piping on campus. The total length of the project was approximately 800 feet of welded steel pipe. The project also included installing approximately 50 feet of 8" steel steam pipe, modifying an existing manhole, installing a new manhole, and modifying the existing piping and valves within the manholes. Most of the excavations required shoring and backfilling with powder insulation.

Mel Jennings and Andrew McManus managed the project. Key crewmembers for the project were Dave Jarred, Alfonso Ochoa and Glen Hammack. Congratulations to all for another successful project at Stanford University!

Leon Jones spent the year providing Martinez Refining Company (Shell) with ongoing maintenance services for a wide variety of projects. Joe Woodruff continues to take care of the office work while Jay Wasson, Scott White and John Passur aided Leon in the field. Leon's crew completed several diverse projects throughout the year. Leon recently left Underground, and George Albright has assumed responsibilities as the supervisor at the refinery. We wish Leon the best of luck in the future.

Telecommunications

Our crews will continue at a strong pace through the end of this year and into next year. We are currently installing over 10 miles of conduit, starting in southern San Francisco and ending in the central business district. In addition, we are in the process of completing phase 1 of the joint build in the City of South San Francisco and will assist Manual Brothers, our Quanta sister company, with a project from Mountain View to San Jose.

Currently, we are concentrating our efforts in the business and commercial districts in light of the approaching holiday season and construction moratoriums. Work outside of the moratorium areas will continue during the holidays. Tim Richards, Matt Cook, Andrew McManus and Eric Gutierrez are providing the engineering support for our work efforts in the City of San Francisco. Mike Carlton, George Castro, Joe Kovacich, and Lance MacFarlane are coordinating the fieldwork. Greg McNeilly, Chris Stream, Jose Lopez-Ceja, Anthony Gross, Jesus Garcia, Rick Martin, Rafael Saavedra, Isaias Rodriguez, and Pat Hinchee are supervising the crews performing various operations, from trenching to fiber placement.

Ben Lyon and Jesse Garcia are working on the City of South San Francisco joint build. Larry Yamamoto, with the assistance of Joe Tagliaboschi and Robin Hie, is responsible for the field operations. Phase 2, of the City of South San Francisco joint build, will be coordinated with a project the City is constructing later this year.

Jerred Peebles has been providing the support to the field group by working with various governmental agencies in obtaining the necessary permits. Jerred will also head up our operation between Mountain View and San Jose.

Underground looks forward to the successful completion of another year with our clients in the telecommunication industry.
